A clear fabric brief helps schools and uniform buyers compare quotations for the same requirement. Start with the garment, climate, daily use and care routine, then review the proposed material on a physical sample.
Define the garment and its use
Separate everyday polos, formal shirts, skirts, knitwear and PE garments. State the student age range, season and whether the garment is worn next to the skin or over other layers. Send an existing approved garment or fabric reference when available.
Specify composition, weight and construction
Ask the supplier to identify the fibre composition, fabric weight and construction for each option. A description such as cotton blend alone is not a complete specification. Record the agreed details in the quotation and sample approval record. For knitwear, discuss yarn and knit construction separately.
Approve colour and decoration together
Provide school colour references and review a physical colour sample. Check how embroidery or printing looks on the chosen fabric. Review trims, ribbing and coordinating garments together; a screen image cannot confirm the final colour match.
Agree care and verification requirements
Describe the intended washing and drying routine. Agree which checks are needed for shrinkage, colourfastness, pilling or other requirements, and how results will be assessed. Performance claims and destination-specific requirements must be confirmed for the selected material; do not assume a fabric has a particular certification.
Keep an approved reference for production
